Meal Prep Like A Pro

Meal planning and prepping can seem very overwhelming if you’ve never done it. However, as with most things in life, having a plan makes the week run smoother and helps you avoid the temptation to reach for foods you shouldn’t eat. Whether you’re planning for a whole family or just for one, meal prepping is a great way to stay on track and meet your weight loss goals.

Our bariatric dietician, Lindsay Queen, not only helps patients looking to lose weight with their weekly meal plans, she actually does meal planning and prepping for herself. Here are some tips from Lindsay on how to make your meal prepping successful.

  • Make a shopping list - it might seem simple but so many people go to the grocery store without a list and before they know it, they have purchased items that either they don’t need or haven’t purchased the items they need to complete their plan. Nothing ruins a Sunday meal prep like not having an ingredient you need to finish your prep.

  • Start with breakfast, snack and dinner - planning out every meal can be overwhelming to the point where you give up before you ever complete your first meal prep. My advice is to start by making breakfast, snack, and dinner. You can then have your dinner leftovers for lunch and it will save you from making another meal while still allowing you to have a healthy lunch each day.

  • Make it fun - if you’re really dreading the idea of cooking all of your meals in one day, invite a friend over and have some fun with it! Having a community that supports your weight loss journey is one of the most important things to living a healthy lifestyle. Find that person in your life and invite them over for a meal prepping party! You can have a little fun and leave the party with a healthy plan for the week.

  • Leave Saturdays open - I personally like to have a day where I can relax and not follow a plan. It doesn’t mean that I can eat whatever I want on those days but it gives me time to feel a little creative with what I eat and reset for the next week.

To help you get started, we’ve created a weekly meal plan template that you can use. This will allow you to write out each meal and make a list of all of the things you need to buy while at the grocery store. We’ve also included an example of Lindsay’s meal plan that you can use as a starting point. Happy planning!
