Gastric lap band surgery involves placing an implant – a soft silicone ring with an expandable balloon in the center – around the top part of the stomach. It creates a two-compartment stomach, with a much smaller top part above the band. This controls how much food can enter the stomach, allowing a person to only eat enough food to fill only the top part of the stomach. After a meal, the food passes through the opening of the band into the remainder of the stomach. Gastric lap band is a medical weight loss option that is usually considered for patients with a body mass index (BMI) above 30 with one or more obesity related issue such has diabetes, sleep apnea or high blood pressure.
WEIGHT LOSS SUPPORT GROUP
For patients who have the gastric lap band procedure, the weight loss support doesn’t stop after the surgery. In addition to support you will receive from our bariatric coordinator and dietician, you’ll also be invited to attend our weight loss support groups. These support groups are a way for our patients to continue learning about how to lose weight, and once you’ve lost the weight, how to maintain a healthy weight. At each weight loss support group, our team will present new techniques on how to change your lifestyle and form healthy habits. Weight loss support groups take place in Benton, Little Rock, El Dorado and Russellville. Click here to view support group locations and dates.
